The Modern Languages Department at St. John's College offers courses in both French and Italian.  Students are able to study French from grades 9-12 and Italian from grades 10-12.  Students interested in studying Italian do not need to be of Italian heritage in order to meet with success.  The grade 10 course is an introductory course. Students studying French and/or Italian will have many opportunities to be exposed to both the French and Italian languages and cultures.   Students have traveled to France and Italy and Québec, visited museum exhibits, seen plays in Stratford, visited the Padre Pio church in Kleinberg, participated in 'Famiglia Day' and Le Club Français activities, taken the DELF Proficiency Exam, and sampled a wide variety of both French and Italian cuisine.  

FRANCE/ITALY

Students studying French and/or Italian will have the opportunity to travel to France and Italy during the March Break.  The tour begins in France where students will spend time in Paris, Nice and Monaco before traveling to Italy where students will visit the cities of Pisa, Florence and Rome.  This trip provides students with an excellent opportunity to practice the skills that they are learning in the classroom and they will also be able to experience the culture of both France and Italy first-hand.  BON VOYAGE !!!  BUON VIAGGIO !!!

LE CLUB FRANÇAIS 

Meetings of Le Club Français take place during both lunch hours.  Meeting dates are announced by the French teachers and via morning announcements on SJC TV.  Students are required to 'register' for the meetings prior to the meeting taking place so that arrangements can be made based on the number of students attending the meeting--this usually means 'quelque chose à manger'.  Students can 'register' on the door of room 210.  All students are invited to attend.  The last meeting of the year culminates in a final Club Français dinner with the Clubs Français from Holy Trinity and Assumption College.  The three schools come together to 'parler français' at one location (to be announced in May) where students will enjoy 'un repas français' as well as listen to a guest speaker.  This has been 'un succès fou' and all students are invited to participate.  BON APPÉTIT

DELF - Diplȏme d’Études en Langue Française

The DELF (Diploma of French Language Studies) is an official French proficiency test which is an evaluation of a student’s proficiency in French. The aim of the exam is to validate specific linguistic skills.  In Grade 12 French, students may have an opportunity to obtain B1 Standing.

EXCHANGES/EXPERIENCES

Students wishing to improve their language skills and learn about the French/Italian cultures are encouraged to participate in exchanges.  ‘Explore’ and ‘ISE’ are organizations that provide excellent exchanges.  Our very own SJC students have participated and fully benefitted from immersion experiences.  See your French Teacher for more information.
